About the authors

Dr Derek W. Keats has been working with information technology since the days of punch cards. As an academic, he has researched and published numerous academic papers on information technology. As a technology advocate, he has led multiple international technology collaborations and software development projects from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe. As an institutional executive he has spent more than a decade leading information technology initiatives in higher education institutions.

For more than 8 years, he has been responsible for cybersecurity in two FinTech companies. He is also active in consulting and consults widely in cybersecurity for FinTechs and other startups. Dr Keats’ unique skill-set, experience and knowledge culminates in a synergy of his passion for education, his deep knowledge and experience in information technology, and his broad experience in cybersecurity and other aspects of technology, including technology strategy and technology in education and business.

He is an avid amateur nature photographer, and spends much of his spare time photographing wild birds.

Esther Keats grew up in Malawi and Zimbabwe. She completed a Bachelors degree in Occupational Therapy from the University of the Western Cape, and a Masters degree Neural Occupational Therapy from the University of the Witwatersrand. She has worked and lived in South Africa, Fiji, the United States, Saudi Arabia and the United Kingdom.

For more than a decade, Esther has passionately observed and explored the intricate workings of nature in the wild places of southern Africa. During this time, she became committed to sharing her nature experiences and knowledge with young readers.
